New vs Used Shipping Containers: One-Trip, Cargo Worthy and Wind & Watertight Explained
What one-trip, Cargo Worthy (CW) and Wind & Watertight (WWT) actually mean, how each grade affects price, and which to buy for storage, shipping or conversion in Saudi Arabia.

Quick answer
New (one-trip) containers have made a single voyage and are in near-new condition. Used containers are sold as Cargo Worthy (CW), meaning surveyed and fit for international shipping, or Wind & Watertight (WWT), meaning sealed against weather but not certified for shipping. For ground storage, WWT is usually the best value.
Key takeaways
- Grade describes condition and certification — not age alone.
- Cargo Worthy is only worth paying for if the container will be shipped again.
- Wind & Watertight is the standard grade for site storage in Saudi Arabia.
- One-trip units are the right shell for offices and customer-facing conversions.
Container grades are how the trade describes condition. They are not a legal standard, which is why two sellers can use the same words for very different boxes. Here is how we use each grade — and what you should check before accepting one.
What is a one-trip (new) container?
A one-trip container was manufactured recently and shipped once, usually carrying cargo out of the factory region. Paint, floor and door seals are near-new, and it will have a valid CSC safety plate. Choose one-trip for site offices and conversions, branded or customer-facing uses, and anywhere appearance or maximum service life matters.
What does Cargo Worthy (CW) mean?
A Cargo Worthy container has been inspected and judged structurally sound to carry cargo by sea — corner posts, rails, floor and doors all within limits — and should carry a valid CSC plate under the IMO's International Convention for Safe Containers.aspx). Expect dents, repairs and faded paint; what matters is that it is certified to travel.
What does Wind & Watertight (WWT) mean?
A Wind & Watertight container keeps weather out — no holes, sound roof and doors that seal — but is not certified for shipping-line use. It is the best-value grade for a container that will stay on the ground as storage, which is how most buyers in the Kingdom use them.
How do the grades compare?
| Grade | Condition | Shippable? | Best for | Relative price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One-trip (new) | Near-new, one voyage | Yes | Offices, conversions, long service life | Highest |
| Cargo Worthy (CW) | Used, surveyed sound | Yes | Export shipping, resale | Mid |
| Wind & Watertight (WWT) | Used, weatherproof | No | Ground storage, workshops | Lower |
| As-is | Known defects disclosed | No | Parts, non-critical storage | Lowest |
Which grade should you buy?
- Storing tools, stock or materials on site? Wind & Watertight.
- Exporting goods in your own container? Cargo Worthy with a valid CSC plate.
- Converting to an office, shop or accommodation? One-trip — fewer repairs to hide and a longer life.
- Cold storage? A PTI-tested reefer — reefers have their own condition checks.
