Reefer Containers in Saudi Arabia: Buying, Power and Cold Storage Uses
How refrigerated (reefer) containers work, what power they need, how they cope with Saudi summer heat, and how to buy one for cold-chain logistics or on-site cold storage.

A reefer container is an insulated shipping container with its own refrigeration unit, typically holding about −25 °C to +25 °C. It runs on a three-phase power supply or a diesel generator set, comes in 20FT and 40FT, and is used for cold-chain transport or as a static cold room. Buy only PTI-tested units.
Key takeaways
- Reefers need three-phase power or a genset — plan the supply before you buy.
- A Pre-Trip Inspection (PTI) confirms the refrigeration unit holds temperature.
- Shade, airflow around the unit and a stable supply matter in Saudi summers.
- A reefer can be a faster, cheaper cold room than building one on site.
Reefers are the most technical container we sell. They are a steel box with polyurethane insulation and an integral refrigeration machine at one end, circulating chilled or frozen air through a T-bar floor. Used well, they give you portable, precise cold storage anywhere with power.
What temperature range can a reefer container hold?
Modern reefer units typically hold setpoints from about −25 °C to +25 °C (some reach −30 °C or lower), covering frozen foods, chilled produce, pharmaceuticals and temperature-controlled chemicals. The machine controls temperature, and many record it for cold-chain traceability.
What power does a reefer container need?
- Mains supply: a three-phase industrial connection (reefer units are typically built for about 380–460 V, 50/60 Hz). Have a qualified electrician confirm the socket, cable size and protection before delivery.
- Generator set (genset): clip-on or underslung diesel gensets power reefers in transit or on sites without mains power.
- Never improvise a single-phase connection — it will not run the unit and can damage it.
Can a reefer cope with Saudi summer heat?
Yes, but give it help. Refrigeration machines work harder in 45 °C+ ambient air, so position the container with clear airflow around the machine end, avoid parking it against a hot wall, and consider shade over the box. Keep door openings short and organise stock so staff find items quickly.
What is a PTI and why does it matter?
A Pre-Trip Inspection (PTI) is a test cycle that checks the refrigeration unit, sensors, controller and alarms, and confirms the container reaches and holds temperature. Every reefer we sell is PTI-tested before handover — insist on the same from any supplier.
Reefer container uses in the Kingdom
| Use | Typical setpoint | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Frozen food storage | −18 °C to −25 °C | Restaurants, caterers, distributors |
| Fresh produce & dates | 0 °C to +10 °C | Farms and packhouses, e.g. Al Ahsa and Qassim |
| Pharmaceuticals | +2 °C to +8 °C | Needs logging and alarm monitoring |
| Event & hospitality overflow | Chilled | Seasonal peaks, large events |
